Friends of the San Jose Mounted Unit

 Board of Directors 2006

Friends of the San Jose Mounted Unit President Denelle Fedor lived on a farm in Boulder Creek, CA as a child. Denelle cared for the farm animals which included chickens, a steer and Lady, her horse and best friend.  After leaving Boulder Creek, Denelle lived in Almaden Valley (when it was still a valley and when Albertsons was Alpha Beta) and now resides in Willow Glen. Denelle comes from a large family; she is one of 40 cousins.  Denelle is the first woman in her family to attend and pay her own way through college. Upon graduating from San Jose State University in 1996, Denelle worked for small businesses and local politics.

Denelle has been involved with various volunteer efforts which include the YWCA Rape Crisis Center and most recently she has become a Child Advocate. Currently Denelle is Chief of Staff for Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio.

Denelle developed a deep respect for public safety officers when she lived in Boulder Creek.  Spending time growing up on a farm and living in a small town, Denelle learned at a very young age the importance of man/woman and animals working together.  Denelle is committed to keeping the San Jose Mounted Unit part of the San Jose Police Department.

John CampbellFriends of the San Jose Mounted Unit Vice President John Campbell, a former San Jose Police officer, retired after serving 28 1/2 years as a San Jose Police Officer, Vice President John Campbell retired as a mounted unit officer in 2004 after serving 10 years specifically in the San Jose Mounted Unit.  John was instrumental in training officers and mounts for the mounted unit, which takes incredible skill and patience. John directed two San Jose Police Mounted Unit Academies with civilian unit trainer Ginny Gerbino. John taught all the academies during his tenure which included public speaking, horse health care, anatomy, confirmation, breeds-colors and patterns.  John was a two time Grand National Professional Color Guard Champion at the Cow Palace for years 1992 and 1993.  John was responsible for preparing the color guard horses for the Grand National Rodeo from 2000-2004.  Each team won first place in the Professional Division and for two consecutive years took overall Best in Show from each color guard first place winners.

John is well respected by his peers and community.  John is the only officer who spent 10 years of his life as a Mounted Unit officer, he became a favorite with the community and many residents knew him on a first name basis.

John and Marsha, his wife, share their 5 acres in San Benito County, California with retired mounted unit horses Ricardo, Citation (4 year Grand National Professional Color Guard Champion 1991-94) and non-mounted unit horse Simon.

Maggie Kelly
Friends of the San Jose Mounted Unit Secretary/Treasurer Maggie Kelly was born and raised in San Jose.  Maggie owned and rode horses growing up.  When the City of San Jose Parks Department tried to take the stable land away from the Mounted Unit, Maggie defended the Mounted Unit and was instrumental in saving the stables and the land they sit on.  Maggie accomplished this task on her own.  Maggie brought enough attention to the harm that the City would do to the Mounted Unit, that the San Jose Police Department, former Chief of Police Bill Lansdowne supported her efforts as well as many others.

Maggie is 5th generation San Jose, a mother of one daughter, retired school teacher and currently resides in the Hensley District in San Jose, CA.
